Toyota TJ Cruiser Could be Brandís Next Crossover

If the Toyota FT-4X Concept makes it to production, it could be called the TJ Cruiser.

The Toyota Motor Corporation has filed a trademark for the name TJ Cruiser with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) for use on “Automobiles and structural parts thereof.”

Recently, Toyota showed us the FT-4X Concept, a compact crossover that is meant for urban adventures, not the rock-filled Moab runs that Toyota’s FJ Cruiser was built to tackle. Toyota wants to cash in on the crossover boom and this would be the brand’s second offering in the compact crossover segment, joining the C-HR. In comparison, the TJ Cruiser would offer a little more off-road capability and more usable space while being nearly the same size.

Toyota may be able to sell a lot to previous Cruiser fans, sales were healthy initially in the US, Japan, and Australia. The new model sharing the same nameplate will have much to live up to.

I was reading an Automotive News article and Toyota may have a problem with overcapacity because their new Mexican and U.S. plants will be operational within a year of each other.

Quote:
"To build the Tacoma in three factories, when you put that together, it's more than the market will require," said Langley. He thinks some of that capacity could go eventually to a new or revised body-on-frame SUV in light of the success of the discontinued FJ Cruiser.

Lets hope they plug those production holes with the new TJ cruiser, but there has been no mention of a global release, heck we don't even know if it'll go on sale in Japan just because it is debuting at this monthís Tokyo auto show. Could be another concept just to show off what the engineers can do.
