Toyota TJ Cruiser Tires

One of the first teaser images of the Toyota TJ Cruiser (FT-4X) was of the wheel setup and it very distinctively had the tire brand as well as tire sizes pointed out.

The tires are from GoodYear and the tire size is 225/55/R18

Something this obvious was definitely put there on purpose which would point me in that direction as to that's what kind and size of tires running.

The only GoodYear tires I could think of that would be suitable for off-roading yet still daily drivable comfortably would have to be the GoodYear DuraTrac tires. The only thing is, upon looking them up, I can't find any sizes in 18" that would match up with what was shown. They just don't make an 18" as narrow as a 225 so that has me thinking it could be an all-new model?

Perhaps Toyota is coming together with GoodYear in order to create a special off-road tire for the TJ Cruiser, which isn't something that hasn't been done before either.

What do you think?

Just to add, after reading through a media release, these are in fact a custom set of GoodYear Wrangler All-Season tires. In other photos you can actually see the "Wrangler" tire writing on the sidewalls, but custom sized it is as the GoodYear Wrangler tires do not come so narrow.

Creating a bespoke set for looks is one thing, but it may be untested in the real world to see how the narrow size would affect its performance. So it could be a one off for the concept just to give the TJ Cruiser a beefier looks, or they really could be collaborating and using Wrangler tires as a base for development.

I wouldn't doubt a collaboration as we have seen it done multiple times before. But even at that, without having a pre-production model or test mule (at least to our knowledge) those tires would technically be untested even if it were on the concept.

Never heard a complaint about the Dunlop Grandtrek's that come on FJ's, so if Toyota just gives us a smaller size of those I will be happy enough. Given how much they're promoting this as an urban product, that's about as special as tires should get, unless we're talking a TRD trim.

What kind of tires would you expect on a TRD trim?

Never heard of anyone running the Dunlop Grandtreks but they can't possibly be that bad anyhow. Supposed to be a low-noise comfortable tire.

Maybe a set of Nitto Terra Grappler allterrain tires, pretty good for both the city and off-road driving.

If Toyota stays within their traditional TRD off-road offering then I would expect to see a BFG variant sized for this application. The Goodyear tire that is on the concept looks awesome on it, keeping my fingers crossed that they have been R and D'd and will offer this tire. The Goodyear Wrangler may be getting updated as a whole and we may be getting a sneak peek of it here.

2014 FJ TTUE, Fox 2.5 DSC shocks front and rear, Stainless Steel Extended Brake Lines Front and Rear, Allpro UCA's, Allpro front bumper & 9.5 Warn winch with synthetic cable and factor 55 link, Metal-Tech Red Eye rear bumper, Stock Sliders, Warrior rack, Safari Snorkel and TRD intake, Bushwacker Pocket Style Flares, M-Pac Springtail barrier- rear door, saddle bags and side storage, ICON Shift Knobs. BFG 315/75 KO2's on fuel wheels with 1.25" Spacers.

I'm not too familiar with the Goodyear Wrangler so I can't really comment on its future tire options. But the TRD TJ Cruiser could come with any dual purpose tire for all we know because there really isn't a certain model they stick with. I know the Tacoma comes with Goodyear Wrangler tires, but that thing is a huge truck.

It's been a while since I've looked at the new Tacomas, however I do know that the TRD Off-road used to come stock with the BFG AT's. The two TRD FJ variants and all of the trail teams through 2014 came on BFG AT's, and as far as I know the TRD Tundras came with the same tire. I would say that's pretty model specific for a tire offering on the TRD off-road variants.

I have burned through a couple sets of both of the BFG AT's and the Goodyear Wrangler Dura trac tires, of the two the BFG is the superior tire. Goodyear makes an awesome tire they just won't stand up to the abuse that I put them through, where the BFG will take it and ask for more.

If they offer the TJ in a TRD Off-road and a TRD Sport I would prefer to see the BFG's, the tire on the concept looks very aggressive and looks great on it but I'm more of a prove it to me kinda guy.
